These masterclasses are part of National Poetry Week/Spring Poetry Month in September 2005, WA.

This fun, pro-active and intensive workshop will run on two consecutive Saturdays and will introduce many different aspects of reading your work aloud - either to a live audience at poetry readings or for recording. There will be ample opportunity to read your stuff out loud. People should bring one or two short pieces of writing (each about 2 mins long) to read aloud, and wear comfortable clothes to move in. Some things we’ll look at:

DAY 1 - 10th Sep 10am - 4pm

UNDERSTANDING VOICE AND HOW TO USE IT - AM

Freeing the voice – exercises and warm-up / Overcoming nerves – helpful hints.

READING TECHNQUES – AM

Marking up a manuscript / Why practise? / What is the theatre of a poem? / Timing a reading / Rehearsing and Recording your work at home / The Three R’s of "performing" poems / Projection, Emphasis and Enunciation.

CHOOSING THE RIGHTMATERIAL - PM

What will work? One long one or several short ones? / What to wear? / Props and other visuals / What works and what doesn’t? / Thinking it through – What is performance poetry anyway?

CONNECTING WITH AN AUDIENCE – PM

Who is your consumer? / Reading to a live audience – from Hi to ‘Bye / Poems for the page versus poems for performance / Can preambles kill?

DAY 2 - 17th Sep 10am – 1pm

VOICE AND TECHNOLOGY – AM

Review of previous week / Performance poetry revisited / Examples of performance poetry / Using a microphone and stand / Microphones are your best friend. / Reading to a radio audience or for a recording / Contrived expression and making the most of the space / Using Music, Soundscapes and your friends…

READ YOUR WORK – WITH FEEDBACK - PM

Or just have your work positively critiqued by Vivienne and allan. Also a chance to record your poetry on disc and take it home on CD.
